Come & Sing Fauré's 'Requiem' & Parry 'Songs of Farewell'
As we approach Holy Week, join us at St Saviour's, Pimlico for the opportunity to explore Fauré's beautiful and poignant 'Requiem'. Whether you have performed the work many times before, or whether you are new to the piece, this will be a wonderful opportunity to experience the work afresh. We will also learn 'My Soul, there is a country', 'I know my soul hath power', 'Never weather-beaten sail' and 'There is an old belief' from C.H. Parry's 'Songs of Farewell'.
The Requiem was composed in 1888, when Fauré was in his forties, quite probably in response to the recent death of his father. Shortly after its first performance, Fauré’s mother also died, giving the work an added poignancy. Of the many settings of the Requiem, this is probably the most widely loved. In comparison with the large-scale masterpieces of Verdi, Brahms and Berlioz, Fauré’s setting seems gentle and unassuming. Yet it is this very quality of understatement which contributes so eloquently to the work’s universal appeal.
As Fauré’s famous pupil, Nadia Boulanger, wrote of the Requiem, “No external effect detracts from its sober and somewhat severe expression of grief; no disquiet or agitation disturbs its profound meditation; no doubt tarnishes its unassailable faith, its quiet confidence, its tender and peaceful expectation.”
